Some excerpts from Show on 7-22-13 “World’s Fastest Speed Reader: Howard Berg”:

 

Nile:  A friend of mine, by the name of Howard Berg; who just happens to be the fastest reader in the world, at least according to Guinness Book of World Records. Howard is actually on with us tonight, so Howard you want to say a quick, “Hello?”
Howard:  Hello.
Nile:  That was a quick hello.
(Howard laughing)

Nile:  An email you sent to me, happened to be talking about household reading and studying for tests. Now, a lot of people might say, how does that apply to me in the business world? Well, we are certainly going to be talking about that. But, one of the things that we know is, in business today, we have to read a whole lot more than we ever had to read in the past.

Howard:  The information doubles every six months and in today’s knowledge based economy,  it includes studying new marketing skills, its new technology that cones out, more rules, laws and regulations that comes out. Keeping on top of news of an industry. We must quickly learn information as it becomes available. If we could cut that time in half, or in thirds, we could have a better understanding for better applications of that knowledge and you can have more time to think about things that really matter to you. It stands to reason you stand to become better, more productive and make more money. You have more time to spend with your families. You become always inclined to know what your priorities are.

Nile:  I couldn’t agree more.  So, the email you sent me Howard, was on basically how to study for tests. How to read for a test and you happen to say some things that might sound obvious for some people. People study for a test, they get all anxious about it, start sweating, and worrying and fretting, nervous and staying up all times of the day and night reading.
I know way back in college, back in the horse and buggy days. When candles were our lighting source. And since everybody calls me too old.

(Laughing)

Howard:  Yeah, you’re quite the troll.

Nile:  Yeah, exactly. I know we tend to study the whole book. And one of the things you said, that is just brilliant,  you said that’s not the way to do it. The way to do it was to study the answers of the questions that were going to be asked on the test. You know we could go through a lot of the if’s and’s or buts about that, but I thought that was a very brilliant business idea. What got me thinking about that in business context is how to seldom it is we tend to listen to our customers and to understand the questions they ask that they have. Most of the time we fail to answer them. But before we get to the details of that, could you tell the audience a little bit of detail about yourself and how you got started and how you learned to speed read?

Howard:  Sure. I grew up in projects of Brooklyn. It was a lot like Westside Story, the musical but we didn’t have the music just the gangs and they had knives.

The thing I discovered and learned about the gangs and the safest place for me to play in my neighborhood, was the library.
The gangs would not go there. I read a lot. And I made really smart reading choices there.
Mostly, I was a nine year old reading books on the theory of relativity, astronomy, poverty. I was not reading normal kid books. And what I did get out of it, was something came alive, for me: biology. My junior year I was getting fascinated by the brain and how it works. I went to the dean and said, “Could do it go into a branch?” I went into a branch of biology called, “Pyscho-Biology.” Where you study the biology behavior. He said, you won’t be able to do it in one year of college.  Well, I said, I want to go and he said, you’re not smart enough. I ended up doing it and each behavior in a minute. I finished up post grad in one year.
I took the SAT at 18 for post grad school, I got an 800, which is 99 percentile in biology. Which means I only got four wrong questions through 300 questions. Then the graduate courses I took was Psychology, which was an AP class. I read the text book  four times in seven hours. I think the test was a six hour test, but I thought It was a one hour test, I took it in fifty minutes.
I finished the test and nobody else was done.  And in 8 hours I was able to complete four graduate courses. Then I realized I was doing was above average. When I started out, I took notes and I started teaching people. So, that’s where we are now, on sharing with others what I had discovered. The amazing part is it works.
As an example, we met a young man, Stephen Terry, 16 years old he graduated from college, with a 4.0 GPA. He majored in Economics from the University of Texas Farmington, got his Masters at 19. A Grad student finished college in six months.  That’s a  whole four year college. Another student passed the bar exam at 19 in California, on his first attempt. And it just goes on and on and on.
Howard:  You start learning information quickly and effectively right away.
Nile:  So this isn’t that you just happen to be an unusually intelligent person? You were able to master and jump on this is something you’re saying about anybody can learn how to do?
Howard:  That’s a good question.  Most of the people that come along think that their brains work differently. And I’ve done a lot of study on it. And I know in the normal average person, with the right training can do it. As an example, if you want to get stronger, you lift weights. If you want to build your brain do brain exercises.
Jordan:  That’s absolutely amazing, Howard. I was trying to explain, to my wife, you really rock, it’s amazing how fast you read at just an insane rate. And I remember telling her the story about when you read the Obama Care Bill when it first came out. That it was so new, that no one had read it all. You might share just a little bit of that story. By the way, I tell my wife this story. Then I tell her, that you have these great products that help people learn to speed read. And she says, well, there’s got to be something genetic going on with him. Because what Howard does is super human. But that’s not really the case. I’d like you to talk about that in a minute. But right now I’d like to hear the story of reading Obama Care and how long it took you?

Howard:  To actually speed read through the House Bill and then the Senate Bill and then there was the Joint Bills. The Senate Bill was 1500 pages and I read it inside of 50 minutes. The House Bill was 2000 pages and I read that in 58 minutes. The Joint Bill was 2600 pages. Now put that into perspective, that’s two boxes of reams of paper, two cases…two cases of paper.  They hid a student loan program inside The Obama Care Bill in order to help fund it. It was there and nobody had found out and nobody had known it because they just put that part in 15 minutes prior to releasing the bill.

Jordan:  I have a question for you…And I’ve heard this from lots of business owners.

There’s a lot of fear out there about going around about social media. What to do and what not to do.  The tenants if you will.

What would you say, to the people who are rather skeptical of this whole social media, “Fad”…I mean,  It’s gotta be a fad.

Nile:  It’s a fad like all the others. My question is, and I do believe by the way; that it is a fad. Where that fad is going, unfortunately we do not know? But it’s the fad that everybody’s going towards today. So the question, at least the way I feel is, when I look at the businesses that are fearful of social media. They are not only fearful because they don’t know it and or they don’t understand it. And that’s pretty common, we have a tendency to fear what we don’t know and or don’t understand. We hear the horror stories about what’s happened on social media.

Jordan:  Yes, lots and lots of horror stories.

Nile:  But you know, the same thing goes with horror stories we hear about anything online and Social Media for Business means,  an online campaign. So, you know, I think, the only way to get over something like that is, you in fact have to jump in the pool and get wet.  While there is a lot of things to learn, most of the time what I’ve learned and the most valuable lessons are sometimes learned the hard way. I’ve made mistakes and I’ve gotten bruised….And I’ve made mistakes doing what the “experts” told me to do.  Yes, following the advice of experts.

Jordan:  And you have learned these hard lessons through, finding things out with your own business. Have you not? This isn’t just something you just picked up because you like social media. You were looking to actually make some changes in your business to make more sales.

Nile:  Absolutely. And it wasn’t just about making “cheaper sales”. Which I think, a lot of people think that’s what social media will do for them. It’s about making better sales. Not only making better sales, but growing and engaging with the customer more. Keep that customer longer.  The way to keep a customer, the way I jumped into it was: I had sales challenges, customer challenges and a way of delivering the message that I want delivered to my customers. Sometimes when you get caught up in traditional media, you find is that the message ou’re trying to get across is not being delivered at all. It tends to get twisted a lot.

Jordan:  How so? Some of our friends talk about how everybody should try advertising, you know, do some marketing.  So for most people, that means doing a direct mail piece or a radio commercial.

Nile:  Well, we’ve talked to a lot of business owners and we talk to a lot of people that went down that path. Like what we are talking about with social media. They don’t understand social media or don’t have the time and so what do they do? They hire somebody to come in and help them with their advertising campaigns/marketing campaign.

Jordon:  You mean, they hire “The Experts”.

Nile:  Yes, The Experts. And what happens so many times is when they’re “experts”. They have the same formulas and your business has to fit that same formula they use.

Jordan:  And what if your business doesn’t fit their formula?

Nile:  If you don’t,  it is typically not a good fit and you both really don’t get the results you wanted. So the beauty of  social media is that people like transparency, they like to see you and they like to see me for who we are. So, to that extent the more natural we could be, the more we let our likes and dislikes be known, the more we relate to a certain group of people.

People these days want to know like and trust before doing business with you. In fact you’ll hear that on this show a lot. We do business with people we know like and trust.
So, we allow people to get to know us, through our social media campaign and generally they get to like us or dislike us. The fact that they dislike us is okay too.

Jordan:  Whoa, whoa, whoa. That doesn’t make any sense at all!  How is it okay for us that people don’t like us?  How does that help my business?

Nile:  Because people do business with people they are similar to. Let’s say that I’m a cat lover, and you’re a dog lover. And you don’t even happen to like cats at all except when you see a dog chasing a cat.

Nile:  So with that being the case, can I talk about my pet? And my favorite pet cat Farley?

He is a nice orange tabby.  Would you be interested that Charlie and I have a close relationship?  Sometimes my wife gets jealous of that relationship. The more I talk about my cat and my cat becomes involved in my social media campaign, certain people are going to like that. But some people may not like it at all. In fact, some dog people may get tired of hearing about the damn cat.

Jordan:  So people who like cats may like you more, than the people who are dog people?

Nile: Yes, people do business with other people they can associate with. We tend to forget that. So, when people come in to do business with you, one of the things we are going to find is. They are the ones who are going to like you more, when they have similarities.

What kind of things do like? Do you go to the same restaurants? Do you listen to the same music? Do you like the same movies? The more they find that you have in common with them, the more you relate with them, the more you learn about them, the more they like you. They learn to trust you. And generally, that leads to more business.
